Event Photography – Restaurants
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 11:22am
First off (and good morning to you all!), I’m looking for some advice. I need a Canon zoom lens that works well in low light levels. I’m thinking of the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens. Has anyone had any experience with this lens? Would you recommend something else? The reason I ask is because of a certain client of mine. He owns a small cafe in my h[...]

Olympus E-P2 Review
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 10:36am
By Vlatko Juric-Kokic It's generally accepted that the best camera is the one you have with you. It's hard to have a decisive moment digital if the digital is not with you. On the other hand, everybody has their own idea of what they find acceptable in such a camera. There are those satisfied with a phone cam, while others couldn't be happier that the "micro"[...]

Introducing Hello Artists
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 10:14am
Hello Artists is a newly founded photography/illustration agency created by former Wieden + Kennedy art buyers Rachel Shapiro and Leah Jacobson. By way of introduction I asked them a couple questions. APE: Give me a little background. Tell me how you got started as art buyers at W+K and how long that lasted then about forming Hello Artists? Rachel: After a few years of working at Blind Spot Magazi[...]

Photographers On Twitter: How To Use It
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 10:08am
Twitter has become a major phenomenon this past year. But with everyone singing the praises of Twitter, most photographers are still questioning how to use it, and if it really is beneficial to your business. One of my readers, Michael sent me this email over the weekend, and summed it up quite nicely: “…I signed up for Facebook and Twitter this past summer. But I guess I just don&rsq[...]

Tip – Choosing a new “Before” image
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 09:56am
Happy Friday everyone. Here's a quick tip for you when viewing before/afters in Lightroom. If you press the \ [Backslash] key in the Develop module, it toggles you between the original image (with absolutely no changes), and the photo as it looks now with your edits. But what if you don’t want your Before photo to be the original? For example, let’s say you did some Basic panel ed[...]

"Beach Dancer"
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 09:01am
"Beach Dancer" ©David A. Ziser I made this image yesterday at the beach in Cabo Mexico. The sun was just starting to set giving me some nice reflections off the water. I loved the rich blue color of the ocean behind my subject. Illumination came from my Quantum flash coming in from camera right giving me the very flattering loop lighting pattern on our[...]

Inspiration Friday: Art For Art’s Sake
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 09:00am
Good Morning Everybody, Yesterday the Cabo Geek Squad, myself and my buddy Kent, pulled out some new camera gear and headed to the beach. We got some great stuff – I’m planning to use some of the images, one of which is featured in today’s “Image of the Day” post above, for another episode of Technique Tuesday which will air next week – stay[...]

Big-D
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 08:53am
I have about a week left on my rip-roaring, crazy book trip, which has taken me north and west and south…and, very soon, east. And then, one week from Sunday, I’ll be home on the ranch forever, detoxing from a month of room service and trying to chisel through the mountain of laundry that’s formed not only in my house…but in my suitcase. I can&[...]

Love This Camera
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 04:31am
First things first: Nikon is not a sponsor of Pioneer Woman. Nikon does not know Pioneer Woman. Pioneer Woman could disintegrate tomorrow, and Nikon would not even blink. Or wink. Or think. Or care. Or bring potato salad to her funeral. I just happen to shoot with a Nikon and spend all my grocery money on their lenses, but hey—who’s counting? My kids know how to for[...]

Time Warner - Letting Freelancers Screw Themselves
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 01:41am
If you're a freelancer, and Time Warner owes you for assignments, for a fee you can get it paid in 25 days after it's approved. Want it in 10 days? The fee quadruples. Again, this is an acceleration of "approved payments", not the acceleration of payment. Reports of 60 to 90 day payment cycles abound,(despite claims that you are getting paid in 30 days) so at what point are the[...]

This Weekend Only Killer Deal on Topaz Adjust Photoshop Plug-ins
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 01:09am
OK gang, two quick things: (1) You know my new strict rule; if a company offers us (you, me, my readers, etc.) a “This Weekend Only” deal, it has to be a real killer deal, and it has to be exclusive to the readers of this blog (not just another regular discount they offer just anybody). (2) I’m only letting companies offer these deal if I know them, and think their pr[...]

FLYPMedia - The Future of the Magazine Experience
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 12:36am
For some time now, FLYPMedia has been creating some really really cool interactivity, building it not only into existing content with publications you know, but also their own original content. So, it was with great anticipation that when I saw the new Sports Illustrated Tablet Demo, I had expectations that a FLYPMedia-like interaction was in the offing. Nope, not so fast. Something similar is in [...]

My Tiger Woods Photos Create a Moral Dilemma For Some
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 12:24am
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to get a media pass to shoot Tiger Woods during the Tavistock Cup golf tournament, and after I posted some of the shots from the day here on my blog, a friend asked if I might send him a couple of prints of his favorite shots from the bunch. I used MPIX.com to send him two framed prints, and I’m honored that they’ve been hanging on the wall [...]

A Few of My Favorite Things… Holiday Gift Ideas
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 12:03am
The big problem I have when I go Christmas shopping is that I always end up finding great things for myself. So this year, I thought I would share a few of those things, just in case you need to pick up something for the photographer in your life (even if that’s you). ♦ Acer Aspire AS1410-8414 11.6-Inch Netbook Unlike most netbooks on the scene today, this model has a[...]
